Chapter Fifteen

The vampire sat on the edge of the bed and watched curiously as Alexis pulled a small vinyl bag from the top drawer of her dresser.

“This will be a fun one today. A lot of the stuff you learn is kinda boring. But I wanted to do something a little nicer. We’ll make you look good tonight.”

Vickie tilted her head in a challenge. “I don’t look good? I thought you said I looked wonderful. What are all these new clothes for?”

Her friend giggled and shook her head. “No, you look great. Every day, you look more like you’re from this century. Your hair looks good and your makeup game is on point. We’re on the right track. But the next thing you need to learn to do is your nails.”

Vickie’s forehead wrinkled in confusion as she looked at her bare feet. “My…nails? Do people today really care so much about such things?”

“Women do. Boys don’t need to worry about it, but girls really have to pay attention to their hands and feet. If you have dirty, gross feet with calluses and chipped nails, it simply doesn’t look very good. When we get back to America, it’ll be warmer out, and you’ll want to wear sandals as much as you can.” She unzipped the vinyl bag and ferreted inside for a pair of nail clippers. “And if you wear sandals and show your feet off, you need them to look good.”

Vickie frowned. “And you think this is fun? It doesn’t sound like fun. It sounds like unnecessary work.”

“Don’t worry. This will be more fun than you think. It’s work, but it’s worth it.”

She lifted her left heel onto the edge of the bed and tucked her knee next to her chin, then demonstrated how the clippers worked by trimming one of her nails. “Don’t cut them too short or curved. Do that, and you’ll encourage ingrown toenails. That’s when the edges of your nails dig into the skin of your toes. It hurts a lot. I got one playing soccer one year, and I wanted to die. The doctors had to do really gross stuff to fix it. So take a little off each one, and you’ll be good.”

She handed Vickie the clippers, and the vampire followed her example, her expression taut and a little nervous.

Alexis shook her head with jealousy as she watched. “I’m kinda amazed that your nails look as good as they do. I figured they’d be long and yellow or something after four hundred years, but they’re not bad. Just…thick.”

“I wonder why that is. I never noticed it before.”

“Probably because you didn’t wear shoes and socks much back in your day. And I know you didn’t pumice or moisturize or anything. I would guess your toenails would get really thick over time even from the abuse.”

Once she’d finished her first foot, she handed her companion the clippers and they took turns to complete the process.

Alexis had a deeper plan than simply doing their nails, naturally. She
